Right or Wrong !

Caught in the middle of a storm
of lust and love
fighting to survive or surviving to fight
the game of lust vs love
weirdness surrounds you...awkwardness numbs you...
momentarily pleasures is all that is sought after
some say life is all about moments
but moments of right or wrong?
moments of faithfulness or unfaithfulness?
its a question worth asking..
I see it wrong but you may see it right..
But who can really judge?
The moments of life..
Lust will overshadow the love at times..
Good times some call it...
but bad times - lust won't survive.
I choose love and you might choose otherwise..
In this world somehow
we all become sinners in the verge of time..
At least for a day, one moment all of us will;
choose wrong over right..
The ones who make it just a moment will always be right!
Choose it for your life time;
someday you will regret - you might !

Does the Sri Lankan job market embrace Gen Y as they are?

Gen Y by its definition is revolutionary and has more interests in diversified areas. Most young professionals have career interests in diversified fields and shows potential in learning faster and expanding their learning horizons compared to the Gen X. I have met many individuals who have various interests in different fields who are willing to take up different functions and work in different industries but the biggest challenge that is faced by many of them is that the  job market not allowing them to do so.

If you look at any job advertisement, job description, most highlight the relevant industry experience as a must neglecting the fact that an individual who is fast in grasping concepts, who has excelled in many different areas, who has performed extraordinarily in professional exams, who has managed time between work and studies, who have performed well in their current functions could well be the next leader for an industry that they are new to. This might not work in very specialized industries such as software development if the requirement is a coder but there are so many other functional areas from marketing , branding, management accounting, analysis, research, operations management, etc where the diversification actually could bring in new blood to the organization.

I am not certain if it is the risk averse nature of the Sri Lankan job market and corporate that doesn't facilitate the diversification at greater extent, but in my opinion it does affect and limit the capacity of most of young individuals who are ready to take up challenges in unknown horizons. Learning the building blocks of the industry is something that can be done on the job always, it is the qualities such as creativity, determination, work ethic, willingness to take risks, hard work, multitasking capability and ability to grasp new concepts that are key to success in today's competitive business environment. So why not give a chance to an individual who has excelled in many other areas a chance to prove him/herself?

In my opinion, risk adverseness in current corporate  are largely due to the non availability of succession planning within the Organization. Most of the time, the recruited individuals are expected to perform as soon as they join in. I believe with the changing environments and given the entrepreneurial spirit in Gen Y members, it is critical that Organizations have a succession planning strategy where individuals with diversified experiences are brought in to the Organization and industry exposure is given so a new perspective is allowed in decision making. This would not only be a ground for success for Organizations but also for young individuals who have started their career at very early ages and who are ready to take up challenges no matter  what they are exposed to.

It is true that Industry experts are required to head an Organization, Unit , Division but if the doors are opened for individuals with diversified industry experiences, I am certain there will be a flow of cross industrial best practices that can facilitate growth in any given Organization. Sri Lanka is not yet there in terms of being open to young dynamic resources but it could be the right time for Sri Lankan job market as well as corporate to re-think their strategies to get the best out of the Gen Y.

They are different and they want it differently.

එකම බලාපොරොත්තුව !!

ඔබ නිදන , තරු හා මා නොනිදන ;
සොයනුයේ පිළිතුරුයි, මාගේ විමසන මනසට ;
හෙට දවස බලාපොරොත්තුවක් පමණයි මට;
මගේ හදේ ඉකි ගසන කඳුළු බිඳු ;

Resisting the Rebel within !!

So close yet so far
So new but feels so old
irresistible but resistance from within
tempting yet boundaries with stop signs
black and white; they fight against
brain and heart wrestles..
Tired of resisting rebellious body
Open door policy ; why can't you tap the personal lives
so there are no conflicts
or sleepless nights
filtering right from wrong
good from bad
Rebelling hearts, minds and bodies
could then survive !!!

Bitter taste of coffee..
sleepy eyes..thoughtless minds..mindless laughing..
thirty more minutes surviving on Caffeine
and i wonder why...
Sigh !!
What we do to live..
To survive..
To keep the eye lids from kissing each other..
Music on the background...
loud and clear....
competing with the snoring minds..
lost souls in modern day slavery..

How I see the world...

Rush ! Rush !
Constant Need to be the first..
Be the best..
Schools, Work, Universities, Societies, Countries...chasing the dream of power !
Superiority - That's what they name it..
I call it - foolishness...
Life.........
is much more folks..
World......
is much more folks..
But diluted in competition , the never ending game..
Let your self out....
feel the world...feel the life...
Take a break and experience..the purpose of life..
Life is beautiful and so the world..
Be the last - you might see a different world !

Ready To Be Special?

Every human being in this world is born the same way. For that matter conceived in the same way during a process which is same and spends nine months of their life in a similar fashion and then inhales and exhales throughout their existence until the last breath is taken after which is death is common to all.

But how many of us do understand this truth of being able to live an extraordinary life in a special way is something that you make out of yourself and has nothing to do with what we bring in to this world.

We all want to be special. Be recognized. Live extraordinary life styles, but how many of us act upon or embrace the little opportunities we come across in our life with both hands? How many of us want to make that commitment today for a better tomorrow?

Never Underestimate the power of "rub offs" !!

Has anyone ever had a rub off effect on you?

Have you ever been around someone that you respect, admire..someone who inspires you every second....someone who you feel can change your world, how you view the world....someone who can teach you so many things by just giving one look....someone who lives his/her life in a way that you just learn by watching them....??

Are you living your DREAM?

If you are a kid, you dream of fairies, charming princes, beautiful princesses, happily ever after lives, so much of love, a fulfilling work life and in our dream worlds, there is never a sight of sadness, challenges, failures, heartaches, disappointments or conflicts. The world is painted so colorfully and there aren't any moments of grey shades.

While you grow up, you are exposed to so many options and even though theoretically, there should be freedom to choose something we love and pursue that as a dream, many myths and limitations set by the society and our own families limit the capacity and room for growth. The parameters of life and ways of living are rigidly modeled in to the society that each of us try to fit in to the requirements and then expect our life to be worth living. We expect living to be interpreted as fitting in to the socially accepted norms. These rigid structures command a significant amount of changes in your life. Years of commitment to academic/ professional qualifications, routine jobs, start at entry level, earn a salary at the end of the month and it goes on.

This value system is in built in the society that at one point of our life where many contradicting things happen,  we naturally fall in to this norm of accepting that the only way to live is by abiding to the in built waves of the society. In my opinion, creativity, innovation, craziness, energy and radical thinking disappears in the face of social limitations.

I heard my mentor say that only 20% of the people realize their dreams and be successful in life. And when you think of it, I sometimes wonder if it is even lesser. How many of us have the capacity and willingness to do whatever it takes to live the dream we want? How many of us can break the chains of social acceptance? How many of us at least try?

I am living my dream today and I realized no matter how hard it gets, when you live it, it is all you need. You need to find the passion in your life and do that for your living. It might be controversial and not widely accepted. But what is more fun than getting involved in the best thing you can ever think day in day out?? When you find your passion and when you follow it, you would know and feel the difference in your life.

How you are never tired.....
How you never lose focus..
How you never wana give up...
How you will treasure every second spent in that dream....

Never hesitate to take that step away from the traditional work myths! Let work give you a life of fun, challenges and learning and the only way to have it is to by following your passion..living your dream !!

So are YOU ready to take a risk and follow your dream??

Are you a STAR, CASH COW, DOG or a QUESTION MARK in the Society?

Do these words ring a bell?

This is THE famous BCG matrix concept for portfolio planning in the Corporate world. There are different strategies that are spelled out for each of these to optimize the profitability for the Organization.
..................................................................................................................................

Have you ever thought of individuals as different brands in this society?

Each of us either add up to the richness of the society or the malice could take goodness away from the society. The crux of these actions would be either a rich , healthy, happy, peaceful and a collaborative society or an unhealthy, individualistic, sad society filled with rage, jealousy, terrorism and revenge.

In my opinion, "Market Share" in this context is the significance and the impact you have on the society. The "Market Growth" in this context is the extent to which you are willing grow with the growing society and its developments.

Some times we think achieving a certain status in the society, achieving highest academic qualifications, being a part of a good deed , being the richest, having the dream job and having the best family is the peak of our life. We think achieving our personal goals in all aspects has the highest impact on the society and most of us stop dreaming and growing at that point. We get complacent in our thinking that we stop growing when the society grows. If you are at this stage of your life, I would call you a CASH COW. The society as well as you yourself would "milk" and when more "STARS" are born, your impact to the society would be lesser and hence would turn in to a "DOG" where you turn in to an insignificant character.

Some might think when I say "impact" it has to be some sort of popularity or high contribution related significance. But NO! I am referring to ways in which you can give back to the society in your own way - honestly and humbly, not expecting a return. As Mahatma Gandhi mentioned "It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.

I believe in non-stop learning - and this learning should not only be restricted to class room or college based. This should involve learning about societies, people, politics, religions, developments, nature and anything that could be new to you. And that is when you can make a difference in the world, someone's life and it could even be a beginning to an end of a dark period for someone. These are the people I call "STARS" in life. People who not only achieve their own dreams but be a part of a dream of someone else who is less fortunate and less capable in some way.

Also, some individuals look at their own growth and they grow with the society, they learn new things but never give back. As much as it sounds interesting in their own world, the responsibility each of us has towards the society we are living by which we shape ourselves is being neglected and hence we become "QUESTION MARKS" to the world.

Some might call this an unconventional way of looking at it but for me this world is an Organization where all the marketing tools we know can be experienced in detail. Each individual become the products and we become the consumers too. The more profitable this Organization becomes the world becomes a better place to live. So in this equation, I personally want to be a STAR where I learn and I give back to the society what it deserves.

What are you right now? And who do you want to be? It is a matter of choice and we all can make the best choice if we are willing to make a difference!!

things better.” ― Robert F. Kennedy

What Every Woman Should Have !

I read an article this morning which had the same title. It was based on the role of the mother in today's world and if a working woman should stay back at home when she is blessed with a kid. It is very controversial and challenging - yet, worth the discussion!

Reconciliation of the Past Year ...

The waves give us a constant reminder of how much repetitive our days could be.  It never stops!!  Life  in many ways is the same.. Sometimes we want to stop! Right now! Right Here ! But it is all about going on.........
